Hi Todd, Mark, and others,

The machine I'm running on does indeed have more RAM than the Java heap size limit on x86 hardware.  Following your (Todd) advice with one modification worked:
JAVA_MAXHEAP_ARGUMENT = -Xmx
JAVA_EXTRA_ARGUMENTS = -Xmx750M

Note that if JAVA_MAXHEAP_ARGUMENT is left empty, it does not work.  If it is set as shown above it works.
