There is a patch to convert Ruby from Gems 1.1 to x86 in the download 
directory. Provided you do not wish to use the LogTM components of GEMS, 
you should be able to manually apply the patch to Ruby 1.4 (as in, make 
the changes yourself -- overwriting the files probably will NOT work).
There is no port for Opal, I'm afraid.
