I've never tried GEMS on amd64 - and my colleague who had an amd64 installed a 32 bit ubuntu as far as I recall to get GEMS working. I would suggest that unless you can get some confirmation from someone at the GEMS group I wouldn't make that assumption. e.g. GEMS under sparc/solaris should work in theory, but in practice I couldn't get it to work either...
