Re: [Condor-users] Condor questions (fwd)

Condor does NOT have an exactly equivalent notion to "queues with different priority", but you can get the same effect.

Depending on your definition of "immediately" (one second? one minute? ten minutes?) Condor can preempt jobs to run another, more important job based on policies that you specify. These are very flexible, but can be a bit confusing when you first learn about them. It can be done.

If you want a job to be paused, it is possible to do so, but it's a bit tricky to set up. Some jobs can be checkpointed and resumed at a later time (like a long checkpoint), but this only works for some jobs (only on some Unix/Linux platforms, must be able to relink job with our libraries, job can't has some restrictions, see manual for details). We have some new features that let you simply pause a job, but I don't have the details at hand.

For a subset of interesting features in Condor (we really ought to update this list!) see:

Yes you can create queues with different priority and other stuff. In addition to cluster queueing system you can use condor for idle cycle scavenging if you use condor. Flock jobs between differenct sites ( Different clusters) and many other advantages. PBS pro has come up with a similar product called e-compute. Which we are still evaluating.

I just answered the two questions you asked, in addition there are many features that can be compared. Let me know if you are interested.

I've never heard of PBS before, but I'm sure many of you can make a case
for Condor!

Thanks!

Subject: Condor questions

Hi Kelly,

I have a couple questions about Condor. We have a cluster of processors
which are used for various jobs. Right now it uses a scheduling system
called PBS. I'd like to switch to Condor instead, but the other users have
some questions:

1. If all the processors are running jobs, and a new job has to be run
urgently, is there a way to specify that it has top priority? We would like
Condor to pause one of the current jobs and immediately run the new one in
its place. Is that possible?

2. Have you heard of PBS? (I believe it stands for Portable Batch System.)
What advantage would Condor have over PBS or other scheduling systems?
This is the question they're asking me, and I'd like to make a good case
for using Condor instead. :)

I hope things are going well up there. Thanks for any answers you can give
me.

Daryl
