Thanks, Zach. That was precisely the problem. The user was going directly to the old install rather than using the symlink to the correct version. Those pesky execute bits are now turned off.

the FS authentication method was modified for security reasons between 6.8.0
and 6.8.1, and it's not backwards compatible.  the old method created a file,
and the new one creates a directory.

here's what tipped be off:

AUTHENTICATE:1004:Failed to authenticate using FS|FS:1005:Bad attributes on (/tmp/FS_XXXSAH3Uf)
