        understand your situation. here are something I think may be helpful:
        (1) if you go to a general IT company like yahoo, google, amazon, almost
        all of them are UNIX-based. so unix knowledge and coding in unix
        environment is very important. I recommend APUE
        (2) coding in itself is important, companies like us need very little PhD
        work, so oftentimes your PhD research doesn't mean too much for us,
        except it demonstrates your intellectual ability from one perspective.
        (3) it may help if you try a position matching your research, then you
        would find they are very interested in your specialty.
