Re: [Condor-users] Pool Of Virtual Boxes

Here at UW-Milwaukee we're currently running POVB across ~120 instructional lab machines running at half memory. The only issues we've run into were small amounts of blue screens on shutdown, due to hardware virtualization being off on our lab machines, and machines not joining the pool, due to rnds failures (coincided with a DNS migration).

I'm running with all cores available to the Vbox now (2 in my current
test), and running two Condor jobs simultaneously did not impact on the
running times (i.e. both finished in around the 36-37 minute mark).
A pleasing result.

As I suspected, with our heavily managed Windows student desktop image,
the key thing is not to give Vbox too much memory. (We are using a third
rather than POVB's default of half.)

This also ties in with my everyday experience of running Windows on my Mac
through Vbox.

I would be pleased if others could report what they use.

regards
-Ian
