Technically, there's nothing that says the email notification has to
actually be an email. If you have a script that can take sendmail-like
input and convert it to your notification system(s) of choice, then
you just need to update the MAIL setting to point to that script. It's
sort of kludgey, but it gets you going for now.

I don't know if that's helpful for the use case you have in mind, but
it might be a good starting point.
