[HTCondor-users] configure error: "failed to connect..."

I'm configuring a small cluster of RHEL7 machines to use condor. I used the UW yum repo to install. The machines are on a small network with fixed ip's. Each machine can run their own condor pool, but when I merge them, I get the following error:

[root@greylag ~]# cat /etc/condor/condor_config.local
DAEMON_LIST = MASTER, STARTD, SCHEDD
CONDOR_HOST = greylag

[root@greylag ~]# condor_restart
Sent "Restart" command to local master

[root@greylag ~]# condor_status
Error: communication error
CEDAR:6001:Failed to connect to <199.17.158.2:9618>

If it matters, the machine's /etc/hosts file looks like:Â

â[root@greylag ~]# cat /etc/hosts
199.17.158.2  Âgreylag     greylag.physics.winona.edu
199.17.158.6  Âtoulouse    Âtoulouse.physics.winona.edu
199.17.158.20  pilgrim     pilgrim.physics.winona.edu
199.17.158.21  albatross    albatross.physics.winona.edu
199.17.158.23  scania     Âscania.physics.winona.edu
199.17.158.24  aykroyd     aykroyd.physics.winona.edu
199.17.158.25  wyandotte    wyandotte.physics.winona.edu
127.0.0.1 Â localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4
::1 Â Â Â Â localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6
â
âChanging the "âCONDOR_HOST" value to ip address, or hostname.domainname doesn't seem to help.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!
