FWIW it's not specific to condor, I had it happen occasionally in cron
jobs, like python scripts. Usually doing `ls /auto/mounted/dir &&
dothework` fixes it. My feeling is if you go directly to some
syscall(s), perhaps open(2) or creat(2), it can happen, when you do a
higher-level poke first: it doesn't.
