This is an interesting and broader question. In addition to Intel CET, the GNU,clang, and Visual Studio compilers have software features to protect against control flow attacks.

Definitely worth starting a discussion on the topic.

My brief understanding (starting at page 18 in the doc) is that indirect branch destinations must have a special NOP-like instruction to land on.
