We second that! We're using SUSE 8.1 on our compute nodes. In the medium 
term, we plan to migrate them to 9.1 (or later, if available by then) . 

We also agree that more 'general' versions (generic gcc/glibc/kernel 
combinations) would be a nivce thing to have.
