Yep, it does flash the SPSS worksheet on the screen briefly as it runs.
Guess that's our answer then.

But, if that's the case, what's the story with the "use_visible_desktop"
setting on Windows?  When I saw that, I thought it must mean that Condor
can run apps that connect to the GUI under at least some circumstances,
which then led me to assume that those same apps wouldn't crash if that
setting were switched off... On the other hand we also tried toggling
that in the course of trying to get things to work, and it didn't seem
to make any difference.

If the answer is "It won't work," that's fine, I'm just trying to make
sure I've ironed out the misconceptions that got us here.
