Re: [Condor-users] condor_master

Barnett,

We are talking past each other ;-)

The second instance of condor_master that I am referring to is the one you are running when you run the command 'condor_master -f -t'. Those command-line options to condor_master simply tell it to run in the foreground and to log to the terminal rather than to the log file.

Hi, Dan,

Not really. I am not running two masters using the same configuration file (why would I want to do that? :) It is possible that during some testing, I accidentally restarted or ran condor_master more than once but it was never the intention. From ps, I only see one instance of condor_master running and this instance is clearly present in MasterLog (as shown in previous email) but condor_master -f -t doesn't give this master information.

By the way, I did condor_off -subsystem master to shut down daemons before restarting a new set of daemons and executing this log-checking command.

The Condor version I am using:

bash-2.05b$ condor_version
$CondorVersion: 6.8.4 Feb 1 2007 $
$CondorPlatform: I386-LINUX_RH9 $

And, I think you're right. Esoteric terms are never better than plain English and description using only "words" is never better than pictorial illustrations and examples. Lots of technical papers use so many "words" to describe concepts and they get carried away, making "interpretation of words" more difficult than the concepts themselves. Head-First series has a reason being successful.

    Barnett,

You should never have more than one condor_master running using
    the same
condor configuration. That is why when you already have condor_master
running and you run condor_master by hand, you are seeing it complain
about "InstanceLock". It is correctly detecting that there is already
another master running. You may ask why it doesn't state this fact in
    plain English. Good question!
