Yeah, I too am sure I've been able to set MCR_CACHE_ROOT, but it must
have been a different life.

environment = "MCR_CACHE_VERBOSE=1 MCR_CACHE_ROOT=. LD_LIBRARY_PATH..."

I guess the wrapper script will have to do.
