Andrew,

Go for reliability over performance.  Redundant power, mirrored drives, etc,
etc, are all wise investments obviously.  

Any modern CPU will do with suitable RAM.  It really isn't a huge effort. 

Also wise to not add any other services to that machine to reduce the risk
of a rogue service bringing down the machine.  

We do use our central manager as the network share for any job required
executables/dll's/etc with the logic being if the central manger crashes
those shares really are not required.  Note - this is not the data share,
just the runtime requirements.
