The nice thing about the mp1script is that you can adjust it to do whatever you want it to do, as it's just a shell script. Some useful information regarding MPICH and firewalls:

If you can figure out how to tell MPICH's mpirun program to use a different set of ports, you can put that into mp1script and call it a day. If you can't change mpirun's default port assignment, then the mp1script isn't the problem.
