[Condor-users] UK e-Science All Hands Meeting 2008 workshop - DELIVERING GRID-RELATED SERVICES - THE ROLE OF CENTRAL COMPUTING SERVICE DEPTS

Hi everyone -

This workshop is probably only of interest to the UK academic Condor community, but as I know lots of you are subscribed to this list, it seemed reasonable to post this here.

Hope to see some of you at the workshop - if you want to attend, please let Clare Gryce (c.gryce@xxxxxxxxx) know ASAP; places are limited. Workshop details below.

NOTE: please reply to Clare to register interest in this workshop; don't reply to the entire condor-users mailing list or to myself.

	Thanks,

	  Bruce

DELIVERING GRID-RELATED SERVICES - THE ROLE OF CENTRAL COMPUTING SERVICE
DEPARTMENTS

11th September 2008
National e-Science Centre
Edinburgh (as part of the e-Science AHM2008)

The support of Grid-related services poses various operational challenges
for central computing services Departments of UK HEI's.

Where such services ARE supported by central departments, this has generally
happened in isolation, with the result that solutions are often
site-specific. Further, there have been limited opportunities for knowledge
transfer in this increasingly important area.

For the purposes of this workshop we define Grid Services to be any
computational activity that includes multiple and/or distributed resources
or where middleware of any form is used to mediate or manage job submission
or data access.

This workshop aims to bring together the following communities:
* Representatives of central computing services Departments from UK
   Universities
* Representatives of middleware developers such as OMII-UK
* Representatives of bodies who fund or provide core
infrastructure/services to UK HEIs (e.g. ISC, JANET(UK), National Grid
   Service)
* University-based Computational Scientists wishing to use Grid-related
   services

The morning session will comprise presentation by members of central
computing services Departments who are seeking to support Grid-related
services at their institution.

The afternoon session will comprise an open, Chaired discussion around the
issues raised during the morning's talks. All attendees are encouraged to
participate in this discussion session.

Attendance is by registration prior to the event by emailing Clare Gryce
(c.gryce@xxxxxxxxx).

The organisers gratefully acknowledge the support of the e-SciNet project
(http://www.nesc.ac.uk/escinet/):
*** eSciNet will fund travel, accomodation and registration costs for funded
members of the project. ***
*** Significant contributions towards travel, accomodation and registration
costs for other attendees may also be available from the e-SciNet project;
please contact Clare Gryce (c.gryce@xxxxxxxxx) for information. ***
