Position Description

 
Introduction:

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is seeking a High Performance Computing Systems Engineer to join a team that is creating innovative solutions to challenges facing the development of missile defense radar systems.
 
Job Summary: In this role, you will help to expand the computational capabilities of the Phased Array Radar System Evaluation Laboratory and enable groundbreaking new analysis needed to develop and assess new radar algorithms.  You will implement new hardware and software solutions, configure and maintain computational grids and supporting equipment, and optimize computational throughput.

 
Duties:
  1. Grid Management - Support the development of solutions to High Performance Computational (HPC) requirements needed to support parallel processing of Monte Carlo simulations and use of distributed file systems. Coordinate HPC grid activities to maximize efficiency of resources, develop software tools that aid in monitoring HPC systems, and automate the operational tasks involved with it. (40%)
  2. Technical Support - Support Linux/windows systems software to include shell command tools, network topologies, scripting, application integration, and configuration management. Technical support includes workstations and rack-mounted servers. Keep abreast of changes and developments in the Linux community particularly as pertains to operating systems, software development tools, grid computing and high-performance clusters. Interface with the facility manager to oversee the execution of user support efforts. (30%)
  3. Configuration Management – Support evolution of policies and procedures to develop configuration management and reliability in the HPC systems. Identify and install software libraries necessary to support commercial, open source or custom written applications. Compile applications from source distributions as needed by professional staff. (20%)
  4. Security - Ensure information technology systems meet NISPOM Chapter 8 security requirements.  This includes security, encryption, authentication, PAM, firewalls, logging, auditing, intrusion detection. Prepare for and support security inspections. Work with facility ISSO to ensure compliance with NISPOM and other security policies, procedures and practices. (10%)

Qualifications

: 
Required Qualifications:   BS in Computer Science or engineering-related field.  A minimum of 5 years hands-on experience installing software and hardware related to High Performance Computing. Must have experience managing systems running various Windows and Linux Operating Systems.  Must have experience with heterogeneous platform integration and networking.  Must have prior experience compiling custom kernels, integrating non-standard hardware, and installing custom software applications. Must have excellent organizational skills for prioritizing and tracking multiple ongoing projects.
 
Desired Qualifications:  At least 10 years hands-on experience managing UNIX/Linux systems. In-depth technical understanding of Monte Carlo Simulations, parallel computational workloads, and distributed file systems. Experience with authenticating mixed Operating Systems (Linux/Windows) and understanding group policies within an active directory enclave. Thorough knowledge of NISPOM chapter 8 and other related DoD IT security directives. Experience working in and managing IT systems in a classified environment. Experience with installation and configuration of HPC job management and scheduling software such as Condor, Sun Grid Engine, or similar technology.
 
Special Working Conditions:  Must be able to obtain a DoD Secret clearance. Facility downtime must be scheduled outside of normal working hours; therefore some amount of work must be performed in early mornings, evenings or weekends.
 
Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
