Note that while versions far apart like that _often_ work, we don't
guarantee anything, especially not the absence of weird errors.
A site recently had a pool where some of the hosts were running 
8.8 and some of the hosts were running 7.8, and everything appeared
to work fine except the schedd would lose jobs if it got restarted.

That kind of thing.
